The 7-Day Onboarding Sequence

40-60% of churn happens in the first 90 days. Your onboarding flow is your best defense.

1 Welcome Email (Day 0)
Send within 5 minutes of signup. Include: quick-start video, key feature highlight, and CTA to first action.
2 Product Tour (Day 0-1)
Interactive walkthrough of 3 core features. Don't show everything — focus on the "aha" moment.
3 Setup Checklist (Day 1-2)
Progress bar with 3-5 setup tasks. "Connect integration" → "Invite team" → "Create first project." Celebrate completion.
4 Value Email (Day 3)
"Here's what you accomplished so far: 5 tasks created, 2 team members added." Quantify value early.
5 Feature Deep Dive (Day 5)
Based on their usage, suggest one advanced feature. "You're using X — here's how Y makes it 2x better."
6 Check-in (Day 7)
"How's your first week?" Simple reply-to email. If no core action taken, offer a 15-min demo.
7 Win Story (Day 14)
Share a customer success story similar to their use case. Social proof + inspiration.

Onboarding Metrics

Activation Rate: % of signups who reach "aha" moment. Target: > 40%.
Time-to-Value: Hours/days to first value. Target: < 1 hour for simple tools, < 1 day for complex.
Completion Rate: % who finish onboarding checklist. Target: > 60%.
Return Rate: % who come back Day 1, Day 7, Day 30. Target: 60%, 40%, 25%.

Reducing Time-to-Value

1. Default templates. Pre-fill with sample data so users see value immediately.

2. Skip optional setup. Only require what's necessary for first value. Everything else can come later.

3. Import tools. Let users import from CSV, spreadsheet, or existing tool. Don't make them start from scratch.

4. Demo mode. Show a fully populated demo account. "Click here to see what your dashboard will look like."
